You can start or resume your regular hormonal birth control right away. Use condoms or avoid intercourse for the appropriate backup period for your regular method.

After taking ella
Wait 5 days before starting or restarting hormonal birth control, because starting it too soon may reduce ella's effectiveness. After restarting your method, use condoms or avoid intercourse until your regular method becomes effective.

What should I expect with my next period?
You may have spotting or irregular bleeding after using emergency contraception. Your next period may also come a little earlier or later than expected. These changes are common and usually resolve on their own.

When should I take a pregnancy test?
Take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after using emergency contraception if you have not had a period or withdrawal bleed, or sooner if you develop symptoms of pregnancy.
