Not all birth control uses hormones. Nonhormonal options include methods that create a physical or chemical barrier to sperm, fertility awareness methods that identify potentially fertile days, and behavioral methods such as withdrawal.
These methods vary considerably in how effective they are and how much they depend on correct use each time you have sex. Condoms also have the important benefit of helping reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
Phexx is a hormone-free vaginal gel used before intercourse. It is used only when needed rather than every day and can be used alone or together with another barrier method. Because its effectiveness depends on using it correctly with each episode of intercourse, it may be a better fit for some patients than others.
How to Use Phexx
Phexx is used before each and every episode of vaginal intercourse.
Insert one prefilled applicator into the vagina immediately before or up to 1 hour before sex.
If you have sex again, you need to use another applicator, even if it has been less than an hour since the previous dose.
If more than 1 hour passes after inserting Phexxi before you have sex, insert a new dose.
Phexx can be used at any point during your menstrual cycle and may be used with condoms for additional pregnancy prevention and STI protection.
Keep in mind: Mild vaginal burning, itching, discomfort, or discharge can occur. Phexx does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Natural Cycles is an FDA-cleared contraceptive app that uses basal body temperature and menstrual cycle information to identify fertile and nonfertile days. Like other fertility awareness approaches, effectiveness depends on consistent use and avoiding unprotected intercourse on potentially fertile days.
